Multistory buildings with cantilevered bays may predominantly deform in a single direction if inadequately designed, resulting in large deformations. This study explores the potential to mitigate this by increasing the lateral strength in the cantilever direction relative to the opposite direction for a 5-story reinforced concrete frame building. It was found that a strength difference of 0.3 times the base shear induced by cantilevered bay loads resulted in similar peak displacements compared to a concentrically loaded building. However, the tendency to deform in a single direction and incur large residual displacements could not be eliminated due to unsymmetric hysteretic behavior. |
